The History of Shambaugh Elementary
Willard Shambaugh Elementary was built in 1962 to accommodate the suburban growth of the area. The PTA was established in the school November, 22, 1963. The school was named after a prominent Fort Wayne attorney, who served on the school board for many years. Mr. Willard Shambaugh left $25,000.00 to the school as well as supporting various school projects while he was living.
In 1968, the school's enrollement was 750. Soon, however, Canterbury Apartment Complex was built along with other housing additions that peaked Shambaugh's enrollment to 920. Classroom trailers were added to the parking lot to facilitate the increase of students. It became necessary to put on an addition to the existing building that year. The new forth wing was ready the start of the 1969 school year. At the time, Shambaugh was K-6 grade. In 1973 the sixth grade was switched over to Jefferson Middle School.
