Shambaugh
History
Williard Shambaugh Elementary School was built in 1962.
Shambaugh was named after a prominent Fort Wayne attorney who served on the school board for years.
Mr. Shambaugh left $25,000.00 to the school and supported various school projects.
In 1968, school enrollment was 750, with Canterbury Green Complex and nearby housing additions being built, enrollment peaked at 920. Three buses holding 150 students were sent to Canterbury Green alone.
Classroom trailers were added in the parking lot to facilitate the increase of students. It became necessary for an addition to the school. The forth wing was ready for classrooms the start of the 1969 school year.
Before 1973 Shambaugh was K-6 grade. The 6th grade was sent to the Jefferson Middle School at that time. Enrollment went back to 650 students.
In the 1990's, Shambaugh intiated a reading magnet program. In 2009, Shambaugh achieved Adequate Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind program.
